AAA Sections Support UNITE HERE Struggle

October 21, 2004
To the AAA Executive Board:
The undersigned members of the Executive Board of the Society for Cultural Anthropology have asked me to strongly urge the AAA Executive Board to relocate the annual meetings to San Jose. We believe that important principles are at stake, including adherence to the AAA's Declaration on Anthropology and Human Rights. We understand the financial sacrifice involved, and are prepared as individuals and as a Society to help AAA meet the costs incurred by a decision to cancel its contract. Several of us have submitted individual comments on this issue; we write as a group to underscore our investment as a Section in the annual meeting program and in the reputation of the Association.

Yours sincerely,
Ana Alonso (SCA Program Chair)
Ann Anagnost
Robert Foster
Bruce Grant
Michael Fischer
Lisa Rofel
Pauline Strong (SCA President)

The leadership of the Society for the Anthropology of North America strongly urges the AAA Executive Board to relocate the annual meetings to San Jose. In solidarity with striking workers, while there is a union-sanctioned strike or lockout in place, we will not cross picket lines to attend any AAA function. We understand the serious financial risks the AAA is currently facing. Nevertheless, any solution involving any meeting inside a struck facility is unacceptable to us. We are prepared as individuals and as a Society to help AAA meet the costs incurred by a decision to cancel its contract.

The following resolution was passed unanimously by the Executive Board of the Society for the Anthropology of Work:
On behalf of the three hundred members of the Society for the Anthropology of Work, the Executive Board hereby resolves:
1. To boycott the Hilton in event of a lock-out or strike. This includes use of the hotel for any purpose whatsoever.
2. To seek alternative accommodations for society-sponsored meetings in San Francisco hotels and venues.
3. To authorize the President to spend additional funds necessary to cover the cost of alternative facilities for society-sponsored events.

Yours truly, Michael Blim President, Society for the Anthropology of Work American Anthropological Association
